What Do you stand for? This spring I took a trip to Philadelphia and visited the National Liberty Museum where I happened upon a sculpture of two children playing. I was immediately struck not just by its playfulness and artistry, but also by the fact that the whole sculpture was made out of jelly beans. The exhibit was about differences; perceptions and realities. The artist chose jelly beans as a medium because while jelly beans come in different shapes, sizes and colors they all contain the same ingredients. While I will refrain from giving a museum review, it is a must see if youre ever in the area. The museum is extremely child and adolescent oriented with wings dedicated to Voyaging to Liberty Through Faith, Coming to America, Moving from Conflict to Harmony and Ways We Let Freedom Ring to name a few. However, I was particularly taken by Student Education Center. One particular gallery of sculptures portrayed beautiful messages about helping others in need, reaching out to others, looking toward the future, looking inside yourself for strength and courage and communicating with others. In the same Center there was an activity section urging you to assess what it is you stand for. As Alexander Hamilton said, Those who stand for nothing, fall for anything. What the Academy stands for and will be providing to the children we serve is an environment where they can experience Consistency, Connection, Competence and Caring. We all need a space to be treated fairly, feel we belong and form attachments, have a sense of mastery and be affirmed. And with this...our year is underway. Ken Barringer, M.A.,LMHC Director
